Linear partial differential equations of mathematical physics (heat, wave, and Laplace's equation), separation of variables, Fourier series.

These two courses are only superficially similar: 421 serves to introduce techniques needed by the Mechanical Engineering program while 423 is an introduction to the mathematics of partial differential equations.
Prerequisites
Calculus through a course in Ordinary Differential Equations.
